Posting Date: 28 January, 2016
The Public Private Partnership Authority along with Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited, India organized a stakeholder workshop on the "Construction & Operation of Inland Container Terminal at Khanpur" project with officials from Ministry of Shipping on 28th January 2016 at the Conference Room in BIWTA, Dhaka. The objective of the workshop was to present the draft feasibility report of the project to the stakeholders and get their feedback in order to finalize the documents. Commodore Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority was present in the event as the Session Chair and welcomed all the stakeholders and the guests in his opening speech.
Mr. Rohit Ahuja, Manager, PWC presented the feasibility report before everyone and discussed the various aspects of this Inland Container Terminal (ICT) project that is going to be constructed and operated under PPP. The presentation session was followed by a participative Q&A session where stakeholders contributed with their insights on the project and made the relevant contributions.
The feasibility study emphasized that around 70 percent of containers at the Chittagong port originate or are destinated for the Dhaka, of which only 17 percent are transported from the Chittagong port by road and rail. The remaining containers are transported to and from Dhaka area by truck. However, the huge congestion in the Dhaka-Chittagong road causes significant delays in shipment delivery of containers. As an alternative, inland water transport (IWT) system has a good potential in the country considering that there is only one Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Dhaka connected through railway to Chittagong Port.
Md. Abul Bashar, Deputy Manager of the PPP Authority highlighted various PPP processes in Bangladesh with particular focus on the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders associated with the projects under PPP. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks to everyone.
