Background:

Dhaka-Aricha National Highway connects the western part of the country to Dhaka, the capital city. It forms an important section of the N5 route which carries a significant amount of traffic from the south western part of the country towards the capital city. There is a heavy flow of traffic on the route, with significant volumes of commercial traffic and heavy good vehicles.

The upgrading of Gabtoli-Nabinagar highway into 6-Lane Expressway on PPP Basis project, as part of N-5 which facilitates the intercity movement of cargo and passengers entering the Dhaka connecting 28 districts of northern and north-western part of the country. The Project Stretch is approx. 24.445 Km long and forms an important part of several connectivity initiatives such as BIMSTEC, SAARC, SASEC etc.

The stretch starts after crossing the Aminbazar bridge and passes through Amin bazar, Hemayetpur intersection and Savar Bazar and then passes Nabinagar intersection at National Monument Site followed by passing Nabinagar-Chandra R505 (a link between N5 and N4) and ends at Bipile intersection with Abdullahpur-Ashulia-EPZ Road.

Objective:
a. Vehicular Overpasses at all intersecting roads reduces travel time by un-interrupted traffic flow and minimizes accident possibilities.
b. Proposed pavement structure and appropriate design to reduce maintenance cost.
c. Ensure enhanced connectivity between Northwest & Southwest part of Bangladesh and promotes socio-
d. economic development
e. The drainage and culverts are adequately proposed for ensuring effective drainage during heavy rainfall and flood situations.
f. Improves Quality of life of the people using this corridor.
Project Scope:

•  A 6-lane access-controlled expressway with ‘At-grade' construction along with service lanes in non-urban stretches and ‘Grade Separated' elevated Flyovers in urban and congestion prone stretches.

•  Major Intersections: Amin Bazar, Hemayetpur, Savar and Nabinagar

•  Flyovers: 4 Flyovers at Hemayetpur, Savar Bazar, Jahangirnagar University & Nabinagar Junction

•  Tunnel: 1 Tunnel from Paturia to Dhaka

Toll Plazas: 2 in number, one before Hemayetpur and other near Jahangirnagar University area
Project Implementation Period:
2022 - 2025
Status:
The TA Service Providers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP, BCL Associates Ltd., and Watermark Inc., are currently in the Development Phase, maintaining communication with the Contracting Authority (CA). Proposal for VGF fund is currently under process in the Ministry of Finance.
